Media Opinion of the Green Party
Despite a reputation in some circles as a one-issue party populated by granola-eating, bicycle-riding, vegetable-eating, idealistic environmentalists, the Green party is pretty conservative.
It describes itself as centrist, but admits it most resembles the left wing of the Conservative party.
As federal Green party Leader Elizabeth May proved in the last federal byelection, the candidates are credible and the party's policies, platforms and promises are far from radical pie-in-the-sky measures that will hurt the economy.
In fact, the Greens are fiscally conservative. In its campaign platform, Ontario's Green party believes in market-based solutions.
It advocates neither cutting nor raising taxes, but shifting them away from "good" things, such as personal and business income, to "bad" things such as harmful goods and activities.
In other words, business, farming, labour and income are good. Needless use or overuse of water, air, energy and other materials is bad.
The party stresses its tax shift will be gradual so as not to upset the economy, and that the tax system will reward those who reduce, reuse and recycle and punish those who consume like there's no tomorrow.
It's common sense -- and it's imperative -- in a modern world.
The party has equally progressive, logical and equitable policies on health, education, energy, poverty, transportation, waste and agriculture.
Meanwhile, the Greens are alone in Ontario in saying there should be no faith-based funding for schools whatsoever in the province. That may not be popular in many circles, but it is inevitable, whether it occurs in this century or the next.
"The Green party deserves a hard look." --London Free Press (October 5, 2007)
On November 14, according to a Globe and Mail/CTV poll, the popularity of the Green Party exceeded that of the NDP for the first time in History.
The Green Party is neither right nor left - we are forward. We are fiscally responsible, socially progressive and committed to sustainability. Unlike traditional parties our vision is long-term.
